Legendary competitive eater Joey "Jaws" Chestnut wolfed down a record 70 hot dogs -- buns and all -- in just 10 minutes Monday to reclaim his crown at an annual New York competition.

Chestnut's gastric feat at the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest on Coney Island marked a return to form for the 32-year-old Californian, who saw his eight-year winning streak broken by challenger Matt "Megatoad" Stonie in 2015.

A bunch of grapes in Japan sold for US$10,900 Thursday, a record price for the variety in the fruit-obsessed nation where the produce can be a huge status symbol.

Seasonal fruit offerings in Japan routinely attract massive sums from buyers seeking social prestige, or from shop owners wanting to attract customers to "ooh and ahh" over the high-flying edibles.

Pedestrians glued to their smartphones were given something else to look at this week, as officials in Seoul launched a safety campaign to keep them from walking into busy traffic.

Smartphone-related collisions between pedestrians and vehicles in South Korea have more than doubled in five years to around 1,000 reported incidents in 2014, according to the Transportation Safety Authority.

The problem is especially acute in a country where smartphone penetration currently stands at around 80 percent of the population, most of whom seem intent on mastering the art of walking and texting.

In a bid to reduce the number of people either stepping carelessly into oncoming traffic or slamming into each other on the sidewalk, officials in Seoul -- one of the world's most wired cities -- have begun installing the first batch of 300 warning signs this week in five locations across the capital.

"We picked locations with the highest number of young pedestrians since the majority of smartphone users are in their teens to their 30s," Kim Ooc-Kyeong, a Seoul city official in charge of the project, told AFP on Wednesday.

Some signs are attached to traffic light poles and depict a person looking at his smartphone as he is about to be hit by a car.

But given that the target audience are people who wouldn't look up from their screens to see such warnings, other signs have been plastered on the actual sidewalk.

"We put 250 signs on the pavements because they will actually be seen by the pedestrians that are looking down at their smartphones," Kim said.

But neither type of warning seemed to have registered with locals interviewed at lunchtime by AFP.

"I'm always on my smartphone, and I've never seen the signs before," said Kim Hyun-Chul, 29. "They need to make them stand out more."

Koo Sung-Hoi, 27, was also unaware of the efforts to keep him from a smartphone-related injury.

"I think the signs on the pavements are too small to be noticed," Koo said.

South Korean smartphone users spend an average of four hours a day tweeting, chatting or playing games, with about 15 percent showing symptoms of addiction, according to state data.

Seoul plans to monitor the effectiveness of the signs until the end of the year before deciding whether to expand the project.

Similar campaigns have already been trialed in Europe.

Antwerp has introduced designated walking lanes in a handful of busy shopping streets so smartphone users can look at their mobiles without bumping into other pedestrians.

The German city of Augsburg even installed traffic lights in the pavement at tram crossings for smartphone gazers.

A 2014 simulation found that if 1,500 people looking at their phones tried to cross Tokyo's notoriously crowded Shibuya intersection, only about a third would make across without bumping into others, falling or dropping their mobiles.

A woman in the US state of Florida was rushed to a hospital Sunday after being bitten by a shark -- with the whole animal still clutching on to her right arm, local media reported.

The small nurse shark, which was about two feet (61 centimeters) long, was killed by a beachgoer soon after the attack, the Palm Beach Post reported.

The victim was an unidentified 23-year-old woman who was bitten while bathing at a beach in the coastal city of Boca Raton, city fire-rescue spokesman Bob Lemons told the newspaper.

Lemons said the woman was rushed to the city's regional hospital with the shark still attached to her right forearm.

"I have never seen anything like it," Ocean Rescue Captain Clint Tracy told the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "Never even heard of anything like this."

Nurse sharks, which can grow to up to 10 feet (three meters) in length, are common along Florida's Atlantic coastline, and are normally peaceful creatures.

But one witness told the Sun-Sentinel that before the attack he saw swimmers bothering the shark and holding it by the tail.

The victim was initially calm when she approached a lifeguard station at the Red Reef Park beach seeking help.

A male companion was holding the shark and there was little blood, Tracy said.

"It was barely breathing but it wasn't letting go of her arm, like it was stuck to her or something," witness Shlomo Jacob told the Sun-Sentinel.

As time went by and a crowd gathered, the woman became agitated and when paramedics arrived they gave her oxygen.

Then they used a board to support her arm and the shark, placed her on a stretcher and drove to the hospital, Tracy told the newspaper.

According to the Shark Research Institute, nurse sharks are nocturnal creatures, and are often found lying motionless on the ocean floor in rocky coastal areas during the day.

The sharks eat small fish and creatures like lobster, squid, and sea urchins -- not human flesh.

Most grown nurse sharks are less than 9.8 feet (three meters) long, but are known to reach 14 feet (4.3 meters) in length.

AN Indian woman who gave birth at the age of 70 said Tuesday she was not too old to become a first-time mother, adding that her life was now complete.

Daljinder Kaur gave birth last month to a boy following two years of IVF treatment at a fertility clinic in the northern state of Haryana with her 79-year-old husband.

Kaur said the couple, married for 46 years, had almost lost hope of ever having a child and had faced ridicule in a country where infertility is sometimes seen as a curse from God.

"God heard our prayers. My life feels complete now. I am looking after the baby all by myself, I feel so full of energy. My husband is also very caring and helps me as much as he can," Kaur told AFP from the northern city of Amritsar.

"When we saw the (IVF) advert, we thought we should also give it a try as I badly wanted to have a baby of my own," she said.

Kaur put her age at about 70, a common scenario in India where many people don't have birth certificates, while the clinic said in a statement that she was 72.

The baby was conceived using the couple's own egg and sperm and was now "healthy and hearty" after weighing just two kilogrammes (4.4 pounds) at birth on April 19, the National Fertility and Test Tube centre said.

Kaur's husband, Mohinder Singh Gill, who owns a farm outside Amritsar, said he was unfazed about their age, saying God would watch over their child whom they named Armaan.

"People say what will happen to the child once we die. But I have full faith in God. God is omnipotent and omnipresent, he will take care of everything," he told AFP.

Anurag Bishnoi, who runs the fertility clinic, said he was initially sceptical about going ahead with in vitro fertilisation (IVF), but tests showed Kaur was able to carry the unborn baby.

"I first tried to avoid the case because she looked very frail. Then we made her undergo all the tests and once all the results were okay we went ahead," the doctor told AFP.

The case is not the first in India, with a 72-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh state reportedly giving birth to twins in 2008, also through IVF.

FINDING comfortable shoes can be a challenge even for those with average-shaped feet. But it's virtually impossible for the

Venezuelan man who holds the record for the world's largest feet.

So it is hard to overstate just how welcome the gift was Jeison Rodriguez received on Wednesday: four pairs of size-26

Shoes.

The donation from Georg Wessels -- a German shoemaker who specializes in making irregular-sized shoes -- included boots,

Sneakers, clogs and sandals.

"I've been making shoes for the world's tallest people for almost 40 years and I do it for free," Wessels said in a telephone

Interview.

The businessman says he has donated some 500 pairs of shoes.

"I never stop to think how much these shoes cost because they're gifts," he said.

The Guinness Book of World Records recognized Rodriguez, 20, as having the world's largest feet in 2014. His right foot

Measures 15.8 inches (40.1 centimeters) and his left 15.6 inches.

Although Rodriguez and Wessels do not speak a common language, they have kept in touch since the German first gave him

Three pairs of shoes three years ago.

"Jeison was so very pleased. It was incredible," said Wessels, who was contacted at the time by relatives of Rodriguez living

In Germany.

Rodriguez is also Venezuela's tallest man at 7 feet three inches (2.21 meters).

A snake thief smuggled a 2-foot (0.61-meter)-long python from a Portland pet store by stuffing it down his pants.

Sgt. Greg Stewart said no arrests have been made in Friday's theft. But Christin Bjugan, an owner of A to Z pet store, said video surveillance has helped viewers and police detectives identify a suspect, and she expects to have the snake returned soon.

"We know who did it," she said Monday. "We know where he lives, we know where he works, we know all about him and his girlfriend. We're just waiting to get our snake back."

The video shows the suspect with a blue-haired woman who appeared to be in on the theft. He handed her some keys before taking the snake from a tank and shuffling out of the store.

Bjugan says it was "pretty gutsy" for the man to put the python down his pants, and potentially a bad move because it was close to feeding day.

On the other hand, she added, the snake does like warm, dark places.

The snake is a black pastel ball python and sells for $200.

"We have a cheap price, usually they go for about $400," Bjugan said.

Stewart said the department has investigated thefts at pet stores, but this is the first time it has involved someone putting a snake in their pants. It also seemed more purposeful than usual.

"If you look at the theft of stuff from pet stores, a lot of times it's someone wandering in drunk and doing something stupid," he said. "This one's a little bit different, although putting a snake down your pants is not super bright. There's a lot of different ways that could go wrong."

The number of seagulls migrating to Kunming City, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, this winter has set a 31-year record, local authorities said Tuesday.
Statistics from the Kunming Municipal Forestry Bureau showed that approximately 40,500 seagulls had flocked to the Dianchi Lake Basin as of Sunday, an increase of about 1,000 compared to the number last winter.
The data also revealed that more than 99 percent of the seagulls were black-headed gulls. Brown-headed gulls were among the few other species present.

A Lamborghini with a giant teddy bear on its trunk was a bit too much for a traffic police officer who stopped the car for violation in Chengdu city, Sichuan Province. Pictures of the teddy bear staring at the sky from the car’s boot took over the social media. The traffic cop, Tan Qiao, who is also the host of a popular TV program that promotes road safety, happened to be shooting for the program when he spotted the car. Tan later confirmed that the car was stopped for traffic violation but did not elaborate on how the driver would be punished.

A zoo in the southwestern city of Nanning recently adopted a two-headed cobra. The rare creature has already survived 15 days, but the zoo said it may need to call in specialists to sustain its life.
The 20-centimeter-long snake has two brains but only one digestive system. It was born on a snake farm and was soon handed over to the zoo for better care.
It now weighs only 50 grams, about 15 grams lighter than a normal cobra at the same stage of life.

A female badger was recovering at a Polish animal shelter Wednesday, two days after the party animal was found passed out on a beach from having too much to drink.
"Oh, youth. Oh, summer holidays," animal shelter Dzika Ostoja joked Wednesday in a Facebook post detailing Wandzia the badger's plight in the Baltic seaside resort town of Rewal.
"We found Wandzia drunk, surrounded by seven (empty beer) bottles. There were two more in the bushes, so it's possible Wandzia began partying there. Haha."
