The Shanghai Book Fair, held from August 13 to 19 at the Shanghai Exhibition Center with an expanded mix of literature, culture and lifestyle, attracted more than 382,000 readers. For the first time, the venue’s fountain square and gardens held an outdoor “Reading Night Market” on weekdays from 5:30pm to 10pm and until 10:30pm on weekends. After 9pm, guests without book fair tickets could visit the vendors selling cultural crafts, creative items, refreshing drinks and light meals. The market-like atmosphere was further enhanced by childhood activities like hopscotch and ring toss, giving the fair a fun, family-friendly vibe.A volunteer team of international students from the College of International Education at Shanghai University added to the dynamic atmosphere. Fluent in many languages and known for their cheerful demeanor, they served as “living maps” for visitors while also promoting Jing’an as cultural ambassadors. This year’s fair launched the “Jing’an First Release” initiative with Shanghai Century Publishing and other publishers. New book launch platforms at CITIC Square, Jing An Kerry Centre and HKRI Taikoo Hui demonstrate the synergy between cultural IP and urban retail. The bilingual release of “The Story of the Left Bank of Suzhou Creek,” a book on 12 riverbank heritage structures, was a highlight. Author Zhu Yining, who leads Shanghai citywalks, hopes readers will uncover the city’s architectural gems and appreciate their historic value and urban rebirth. The launch was followed by a panel discussion. According to Professor Zhu Dajian of Tongji University, Suzhou Creek is becoming a model for world-class waterfront development by combining culture, commerce, ecology and community.Huang Yihai, director of the Shanghai Bank Museum, reflected on the adaptive reuse of historic riverbank warehouses, which now offer fresh views of the city’s financial history.Andy Boreham, a Shanghai Daily columnist and long-time foreign resident of the Suzhou Creek stretch covered in the book, said the area has become a riverfront destination for jogging, citywalks, photography and café-to-bar culture, a place where people can immerse themselves in art and city life. It has become an essential destination for many foreigners in Shanghai, he added.

Shanghai’s Jing’an District has launched its first-ever “Nightlife Season,” aiming to set a new benchmark for the city’s after-dark culture. From landmark light projections to glowing parasols, a dazzling program of installations is casting the district in theatrical hues, turning Jing’an into a dynamic hub for fashion, leisure and upscale experiences long after sunset.Anchored on Wujiang Road, the festival connects three of the district’s marquee destinations — HKRI Taikoo Hui, Zhangyuan Garden and Fengshengli — into a vibrant nighttime ecosystem of markets, terrace dining, public art and outdoor events. Each venue contributes its own character: HKRI Taikoo Hui blends creativity with art-driven retail; Zhangyuan Garden merges historic heritage with contemporary entertainment; and Fengshengli focuses on food and social life. Together they form one of Shanghai’s most ambitious experiments in building a modern night economy that bridges tradition and innovation.“The Louis,” Louis Vuitton’s cruise boat-style cultural and commercial landmark, is anchored at HKRI Taikoo Hui. It combines exhibition, food and retail, proof of the allure of Shanghai and China as attractions for international business. Also, visitors can browse a curated night market featuring artisanal food, open-air theater, live performances and virtual reality immersive experiences. To amplify the cultural atmosphere, the mall has unveiled “Ocean Encounters,” a public art exhibition created with artists from China, the United Kingdom and Japan. Through large-scale installations and interactive displays, the show reimagines the shopping complex as a vast seascape, inviting audiences to reflect on the dialogue between urban life and nature.Zhangyuan Garden — one of the largest surviving shikumen complexes in Shanghai — has extended its opening hours to midnight during the festival. Alongside the historic alleys, visitors can sample five specialty beers and four new cocktails designed to capture the spirit of summer nights.A headline draw is the area’s partnership with Disney China for a Zootopia-themed pop-up. The immersive event recreates scenes from the hit animation film and includes themed shops. Luxury names like Givenchy and Diptyque are also seizing the moment, staging global premieres and exclusive showcases that reinforce Jing’an’s growing reputation as a magnet for high-end retail.Fengshengli, meanwhile, is leaning into Shanghai’s appetite for trendy dining and nightlife. Along Maoming Road N., restaurants and cafés are extending hours and expanding outdoor seating, offering everything from international cuisine to inventive cocktails. Its blend of stylish venues and social buzz has made it a hotspot for younger crowds looking for fresh late-night experiences. To bring more people into the mix, the district has rolled out the “Jing’an Night Sail Pass.” The pass links nearly 1,000 merchants — from malls and hotels to restaurants and theaters — and offers discounts, gifts and reward points, creating a cross-sector consumption loop. Its daytime counterpart passes, introduced earlier this year, were seized within hours, highlighting how integrated ticketing can extend consumer journeys across exhibitions, cafés, historic sites and shopping centers. But the festival isn’t just about shopping and dining. The cultural lineup is equally robust: immersive theater productions like “Sleep No More,” live music at Paramount Livehouse and the Majestic Theatre, open-air film screenings, street performances and artist-led exhibitions that spill into public squares.Themed routes link cultural landmarks such as the Shanghai Natural History Museum and the Picasso Art Center, offering nighttime tours that blend history, architecture and contemporary art. For younger audiences, even fitness finds a place in the program, with late-night yoga and aerobics sessions lighting up outdoor plazas.By weaving commerce, culture and creativity together, Jing’an’s “Nightlife Season” reflects how urban districts are reinventing themselves after dark. More than a festival, it’s a test case for Shanghai’s ambitions to build a globally competitive night economy — one where lifestyle, heritage and innovation thrive side by side.

Minhang companies have been forerunners in developing innovative models with specialized functions for various scenarios. The International Advanced Air Mobility Expo, held in late July, provided a boost to the development of drones and electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.Minhang District is riding the wave, creating relationships with research institutions and commercial firms to advance in the rapidly increasing industry sector.A tripartite intent deal worth US$1.75 billion was signed in late July at the expo. Minhang-based Volant Aerotech will supply 500 eVTOL aircrafts to Thailand’s Pan Pacific Co Ltd, while China National Aero-technology International Engineering Corp will support the development of low-altitude infrastructure. This was the largest international single order in China’s passenger eVTOL industry to date, as well as the latest sign that Minhang’s low-altitude economy is making positive progress toward high-quality development.Volant seeks close collaboration with all parties in their respective areas of expertise, including application scenario development, maintenance and infrastructure construction, as well as the development of vertical takeoff and landing facilities. This will allow China’s superior eVTOL products to fly internationally, adding value to transportation.During the expo, Minhang formed a low-altitude economy industry alliance, a strategic coalition of prominent companies, research institutions and state-backed companies. The alliance’s members include the School of GeoSpatial Artificial Intelligence at East China Normal University, the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and AVIC Airborne Systems Co.The district also intends to construct a demonstration site suited for widespread low-altitude applications in megacities.Officials from the Minhang District Economic Commission said that the alliance’s goal is to create a communication and cooperation platform geared toward corporate demands and focused on improving independent innovation skills. It will encourage the construction of an industrial value chain based on complementary advantages and common interests, serving as a key tool and vehicle for driving the rapid development of Minhang’s low-altitude economy. The formation of the alliance ushers in a new era of collaborative development and industry cluster expansion for the district’s low-altitude economy. It already has a strong presence, bolstered by top scientific research skills and a huge number of exceptional enterprises in the domains of aircraft R&D and manufacture, as well as aviation support services.Minhang’s aviation industry exceeded 20 billion yuan (US$ 2.79 billion) in 2024 and aims to achieve 50 billion yuan by 2027.It has begun construction on a low-altitude testing site in the Wujing area, which will specialize in replicating complicated urban terrain situations and facilitate low-altitude flight testing and airworthiness verification. It is expected to serve as a “testing ground” for future urban air transportation. In 2024, the low-altitude industry cluster in Wujing had an industry production value of 15.9 billion yuan, with an annual growth rate of more than 10 percent over the previous three years. The town houses 117 high-growth aviation enterprises, with a robust aviation sector ecosystem taking shape.Meanwhile, Minhang-based TCab Tech signed a billion-dollar contract with the UAE’s Autocraft for 350 eVTOLs last month.Kintsugi, an Abu Dhabi-based corporation that invests in the research and deployment of sophisticated technology in a variety of industries, operates Autocraft, its advanced air mobility arm.The E20 is TCab Tech’s self-developed flagship model, a five-seat tilt-rotor eVTOL with a 12-meter wingspan, a 200-kilometer flight range and a top speed of 320 kilometers per hour. The business has positioned its E20 eVTOL aircraft for a variety of commercial applications throughout the Middle East and North Africa, including low-altitude tourism and urban air mobility.

The “Shanghai Ferry No. 11” debuted in Wujing Town’s waterways in early August. The first new energy ferry boat in the country took off from the Chegouqiao Ferry Crossing with two dozen families, who enjoyed the riverbank landscape and learned about the town’s history. The “Cityboat” ferry ride covered 21 kilometers in about 70 minutes. The ferry’s cabin is decked with monthly commuting tickets from 1988, when it transported an average of 1 million passengers every day.Later, cross-river bridges and highways made public transportation more accessible. The large industrial town, featuring “Five Golden Flowers” — the Shanghai Carbon Plant, Shanghai Coking Plant, Wujing Chemistry Plant, Shanghai Electrification Plant and Wujing Thermal Power Plant, later transformed into a green riverbank area and a national high-tech innovation park.Gu Zhen, a teacher at a community school in Wujing, told passengers that the Wujing Power Plant served local companies and households. The two massive cooling towers are still used by grain warehouses directly linked with the China Grain Reserves Group. The ferry journey provided guests with a fresh understanding of the city’s economic development.Wujing’s Party Secretary Jin Haimin said the ferry tour integrates tourism, recreation, history and urban landmarks, enabling passengers to witness ecological restoration.

Autonomous agricultural technology works perfectly within the confines of an unmanned farm in Waigang Town, but in Malu Grape Theme Park, the laughter of families blends with the aroma of fruits. The Jiading countryside offers a vibrant view with diverse scenes that collectively illustrate a flourishing industrial sector alongside cohesive agricultural and tourism growth.Five new themed pavilions have been established at the Wanjin Industrial Park in Dashipi Village, Xuhang Town. The largest area encompasses around 2,239 square meters. The site that previously hosted East China’s largest ornamental fish export firm is initiating a new endeavor. The industrial park’s investment includes two components: current scientific research facilities spanning 6,000 square meters and 160 mu (10.67 hectares) of agricultural land and water resources within the park. The project centers on five parcels of communal property, with the rental income directly benefiting the village collective. There are 28 villas near the theme pavilions. Along with the 44 farmhouses in the first phase of the Fuhu Village project, they will paint a livable Jiangnan pastoral landscape with white walls, black tiles and bridges, enhancing the living experience of villagers. The villagers’ service center and the community restaurant will be ready by the end of this year. It is expected to generate employment and open up a new channel for village-level financing from catering. In a renovated old warehouse, the intangible cultural heritage straw plaiting studio is coming up. The old craftsman skillfully transforms wheat straw into exquisite grasshopper cages and storage baskets. This traditional craft has regained an inheritance base here.In Shuangtang Village of Huating Town, the village committee has turned idle farmhouses into new business ventures such as teahouses and cultural and creative studios.Walking in the lane, the staggered shops on both sides of the road form a unique landscape, breeding new forms of rural economy.Shiyi Courtyard is a new business that started this year. The bamboo fence of the courtyard encloses a poetic space. Transformed from an idle residential house, the teahouse is filled with fragrance, and the courtyard is lush with vegetation.“At present, 20 idle villager houses have been acquired, 12 have been renovated, and 12 have been put into operation,” said Zhu Xiaoyan, Shuangtang’s Party secretary and director. The village collective’s rent income has achieved a ladder-like growth. The annual rent income of villagers was about 20,000 yuan (US$2,780.82) before, but now, thanks to the project, it has increased to more than 50,000 yuan. Both Dashipi and Shuangtang villages have focused on the integration of agriculture and tourism, making rural tourism ignite rural vitality.Dashipi has developed agricultural tourism activities, such as fishing, by expanding and extending new rural industries and business forms.Shuangtang has innate advantages in developing rural tourism. The Liudao Ecological Scenic Area is one of the important habitats for wild animals in Shanghai and the only land bird protection base in Jiading, covering an area of 370 mu and planting more than 110 kinds of trees. The village also boasts rich cultural and tourism resources such as a golf club, an equestrian club and a children’s activity camp. There are three ancient buildings registered as Jiading’s immovable cultural relics.“By hosting citizen sports meetings, farmer harvest festivals and agricultural experience activities, we further explore new ways of agricultural tourism development, attracting about 60,000 tourists every year and creating 300 jobs,” said Zhu.

When the rusted steel skeleton meets the agile artistic creativity, and the roaring mechanical sounds gradually transform into the aroma of coffee and the rustle of book pages, Jiading’s old factories in memory are being transformed into new trendy spots with a mix of “industrial style and literary buff.”Art hotelThe La Maison Des Vignes Shangha was formerly a colored pencil factory. The stationery factory in Dayu Village, Malu Town, has been turned into an art hotel, providing visitors with an immersive living experience. The hotel’s design has retained the old industrial foundation, with wood and rusting iron providing a gritty retro feel. The leftover paint traces on the ground serve as inspiration for the lobby walls, while the hotel’s public area is a gallery, displaying a variety of artworks. Each guest room shows ingenuity. The walls look like pencil holes, the frames are inlaid with fine colored pencil powder, and the designer’s ideas are converted into unique wallpaper tiles. Video clips baseYaoji Technology Park, once a poker production base in Jiading, is experiencing a resurgence. In 2020, Yaoji converted the empty old factory into an industrial park for live broadcasting and product promotion — the Shanghai International Short Video Clips Center. This year, the park will finish the outdoor base with 5,000 square meters of city walls, markets and pavilions, creating an immersive environment for ancient costume dramas.Technology parkXiaomei Technology Park in Nanxiang Town, once home to Shanghai Yahou Wood Co, has turned its 22,000-square-meter industrial property into a modern, intelligent manufacturing industrial park that includes R&D, office and exhibition facilities. The park targets intelligent manufacturing and the robot industry as its primary investment draw. It has preserved the old primary structure and created a quiet and convenient working environment for established businesses by reconstructing walls, inserting soundproof boards, and altering floor heights.Art centerArtron (Shanghai) Art Center was established in 2012 at the site of the former Shanghai No. 16 Towel Factory. The main building complex, which includes a library-style art bookstore, an art gallery and cafes, has sparked interest since its construction.Among these, the creative inspiration for the park’s icon, the Ding Yi Building, came straight from the works of artist Ding Yi.The designer turned the painting’s 48 different “rice characters” into custom-fired clay bricks made in Foshan, Guangdong Province, which cover the building face and create a rich light and shadow rhythm in the sun.The indoor coffee shop is particularly unusual, including massive image albums with each page as gorgeous as wallpaper. It’s similar to wandering through an art museum’s exhibition halls.Fashion hubThe North Hongqiao Fashion Creative Park was once an old factory near Jiangqiao on the Wusong River’s north bank. The focus is on the fashion, cultural and creative industries; it has introduced and incubated a number of high-quality firms and brands, including LAGOGO and UTO.

Wu Xiaoyan stood on the summit of Muztagh Peak at 7,546 meters, feeling the cold wind brush against her cheeks.

Wu Xiaoyan stood on the summit of Muztagh Peak at 7,546 meters, feeling the cold wind brush against her cheeks. She took in the breathtaking view of layers of snow-capped mountains stretching beneath her. The rising sun bathed the summits in a warm glow, resembling a “platinum feast.”“At that moment, I suddenly felt enlightened,” Wu, a native of Jiading District’s Anting Town, said. The wind roared in her ears, nearly drowning out all sounds, yet her thoughts remained clear.“The ‘lofty snow mountains’ from the Chinese textbook were suddenly a vivid reality before me.”As she took a photo at the summit, she caught a glimpse of herself in the camera, bundled in a bulky climbing suit, and realized that every effort had been worth it.Muztagh Peak is situated in the Pamir Plateau of northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The peak’s oxygen-deficient environment poses challenges, and climbers must navigate treacherous, ice-cracked terrain.Since December, Wu has been gathering information related to Muztagh Peak and has begun training in mountaineering. In March, the Mountaineering Association of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region announced registration information for those wishing to scale Muztagh Peak.Previously, Wu had ascended the 6,178m-tall Yuzhu Peak in northwest China’s Qinghai Province. Muztagh Peak was her next goal. The attempt to scale Muztagh was set before the ice-melting phase to avoid risks, but it coincided with the active period of ice cracks. There are two must-see spots connected only by a snow bridge tens of centimeters wide, with bottomless glacier cracks on both sides, “which were like the mouth of the earth opening.”The ice crack at 5,900m could still be crossed using a sledge, but only one person at a time. When Wu was descending the mountain, she discovered that the snow bridge had melted. The road construction team of the Xinjiang Mountaineering Association built a temporary bridge with metal ladders and wooden boards.“I counted every step and silently said to myself, ‘Slow down, be more stable.’”When she stepped onto the snow slope on the other side, she sat down, only to discover that snow grains had gotten into her gloves and her hands were numb.“That tens of meters of bridge seemed to take a lifetime to walk.” But, looking back, she felt fortunate. On the other side of the bridge, the guide from another team reached out to assist the last team member in balancing his body. “People in the snow mountains are all teammates.”Wu worked in the medical services industry and is aware of her physical state. She began training seven months in advance. The most agonizing experience was climbing stairs with weight. She found a stair climber at a local gym, packed more than 10 kilograms of dumbbells into her backpack, and climbed for an hour. The altitude where she lives is merely a few meters, whereas Muztagh Peak is 7,546 meters. “The body is like a sponge, and it has to slowly adapt to the ‘weight’ of the altitude.”The team’s glacier training became a battleground for her to compete against her body. The significance of the training became clear at the 6,900m camp. Her blood oxygen saturation was only around 70.“Reaching the summit is only half the battle; being able to return safely is the ultimate goal,” Wu said. The scariest part was the tiredness at 7,000m. She leaned against her trekking pole, feeling the snow slope beneath her boots shake. “The guide was shouting beside me, ‘Don’t sleep!’” She then realized that she had been yawning at the time. She pinched her cheeks and followed the guide’s tracks one by one.“Every step was a fight with my oxygen-deprived body.”There are plenty of warm details. At the 6,200m camp, the guide removed a pot from his bag, which turned out to be a pot of chicken soup. The pot of soup weighed more than 5kg.“I don’t know how they carried it up.”Wu drank the hot soup and glanced at her companions, instantly feeling that “no matter how difficult the road is, it makes sense to walk together.”
